A Mardi Gras Celebration!

The Southcoast Brass Band is a 7-piece brass band dedicated to the traditions of jazz and funk that radiate from New Orleans.

This will be their second time returning to The Shep for their hit Mardi Gras Celebration show! They will have audiences dancing all night with the impressive talent and undeniable energy they bring to our stage!

About the Artists

MICHAEL ROCHA

Founder & Trombone

Raised in New Bedford, MA, Michael studied under Jack Martin and Kenny Wenzel. He scored his first musical gigs as a teenager with the Portuguese American Band, Tri-County Symphonic Band, Meadowlarks Big Band, and John Salerno Big Band across MA and RI. While attending full-time medical school in Worcester, he continued to perform with the Worcester Jazz Orchestra. Returning to New Bedford in 2008 to practice cardiology, he has since been active with regional jazz ensembles. In 2011, he helped bring jazz back to the iconic Gilda’s Stone Rooster. By 2017, his love of New Orleans jazz, funk, and soul music inspired him to form the Southcoast Brass Band. Today, the SCBB is regionally acclaimed and comprised of award-winning musicians.

MARCUS MONTEIRO

Saxophone

Praised as being a “force to be reckoned with” by Shaquille O’Neal, saxophonist Marcus Monteiro continues to impress his audience with intensity, interpretation, and consummate improvisational skills. He received his degree in music (B.M.) from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where he studied with Santi Debriano, Rick Britto, and Royal Hartigan. After graduating, his fascination with jazz and improvisation continued, leading him to develop original music materials for ear training, improvisation, and eventually, publish a book about sight reading. In recent years, Marcus has shared the stage with The O’Jays, The Rebirth Brass Band, George Clinton, Tavares, and Cirque du Soleil among many others. Marcus has also traveled throughout the world performing in jazz festivals in Cape Verde, Panama, Canada, and countless others throughout the United States.

CHARLES Z. KALAJIAN

Percussion

Percussionist, educator, and entrepreneur Charles Z. Kalajian B.M., & M.M., University of Rhode Island, uses his wide-ranging talents to adapt comfortably to a variety of environments. As an instructor and performing artist, he performs and teaches master classes and clinics throughout Southern New England. Charles has had the opportunity to study and perform at some of the most reputable venues across the northeast, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, Seiji Ozawa Tanglewood in Lenox, MA, Koussevitzky Music Shed in Lenox, MA, Lupos Heart Break Hotel in Providence, RI, Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs MA, and The George Kent Performance Hall in Westerly, RI.

BILL KINGSLAND

Trumpet

Bill Kingsland is a career teacher and musician serving as Director of Music in the Dartmouth Public Schools through 2020 and currently as adjunct professor of Brass Methods and Applied Music at the University of Mass. Dartmouth. As a young trombonist he was principal of the GreaterBoston Youth Symphony and later performed with the New Bedford, Plymouth, and Cape Cod Symphonies as well as the Chatham Chorale. For the last 30 years he has been a commercial musician in Newport, Providence, Nantucket, and Boston for exclusive weddings and corporate events. Most recently he can be seen with the Southcoast Jazz Orchestra, the Southcoast Brass Band, the Bay Colony Brass, and the Tri County Symphonic Band. His hobbies are the restoration of classic cars and his collection of vintage brass instruments.

PAUL CHADBOURNE

Sousaphone

Paul has been with the South Coast Brass Band since its inception in 2017. As a native of South Grafton, MA, Paul proudly calls the South Coast area his second home. As an avid freelance musician, he has performed with many different groups in various genres. Some groups include the Italian American Band of Lawrence, The Hot Tamale Brass Band, Matthew Hartnett and the Gumbo All-Stars, and the Reading Symphony Orchestra. Paul has a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance degree from Rhode Island College. While there, he studied with Thomas Gregory, Michael Milnarik, Tony Clements, Greg Fritze, and Alan Baer. Paul is also an Endorsing Artist for Brand Mouthpieces of Switzerland.

DAN SCHWARTZ, “DR. D”

Percussion

Dan started playing trumpet in junior high school and later studied piano and solfeggio with Jose Da Costa. In his mid-twenties he switched to conga drums, studying African drumming with Babatunde Olatunji. He then studied Latin and Afro-Cuban music with Ritchie ‘Pablo’ Landrum at the Berklee School of Music, Abdoul Doumbia, and later, privately, with master congueiro Giovanni Hidalgo. He has played with many musical talents including Bobby Greene and Coleus, Stan Strickland, Tanya Hart, Tavares, Eddie ‘Stack’ Ames, the Walker Band, Space Clinic, Tavares, Joel Hiller, McCarthy Richards and Legge, Dori Rubbicco, Southcoast Jazz Orchestra, The Neal McCarthy Problem, and Duke and the Drivers.

JONATHAN BOJARSKI

Tenor Saxophone

Jonathan Bojarski grew up in a home filled with music, inspired by his father, who played the saxophone and sparked Jonathan’s lifelong passion for the instrument. He started playing at age 8 and has been hooked ever since. Known affectionately as the “Musician Physician” by his wife, Jonathan balances his work as a Southcoast physician with a deep love of performing, composing, and sharing music.

A founding member of the Blowholes Saxophone Quartet, Jonathan also plays with the Southcoast Jazz Orchestra and performs regularly with his son Kazuya in their duo, Children of the Horn. Over the years, he’s composed and arranged more than 200 pieces and built an impressive collection of saxophones, driven by his love for the instrument’s history and sound. For Jonathan, music is more than a hobby—it’s a way to connect, create, and bring joy to those around him.
